I basically fish with Seeker and Calstar Rods. I find the Seeker rods to be a little softer and more forgiving. The first rods I bought were the Classic Series and I now also have a Black Max. I also wrapped my own Seeker rod in a rod wrapping class.
Last year in August, I was on a 3 day trip on the Searcher. We got into a bite of big Blue Fin and Art told us to fish with 40# test and up. I followed instructions but wasn't getting bit. People all around me we hooking up on lighter gear 20-30# and landing 20 to 35 LB fish.
I couldn't stand it and dropped down to 30# test on a Penn 555 GS with a Seeker Classic SC 670 - 7'. Immediately I got slammed and was on a Blue Fin just over 2 hours and around the boat over 6 times. It was the fight of my life. I wish I had a picture of the fish to share with you however it broke off at deep color. Kirk the deck hand who was with me most of the time estimated the fish to be 70-80 lbs.
I just wanted to say how well the rod held up. I put as much pressure as I possibly could on that rod and it held up much better than I. I set it on the rail and really leaned on it and it held up like a champ. We had to button the drag down and really pull on that fish to make any gains and no problems with the rod. Hopefully next time with a little luck and more experience, I will land that fish!
