Texas Tuna

by Scott Townson
Seeing is believing. My favorite set-up is a CJBF65H wrapped by Louis P. of
Badfish with AFTCO gimble and reel seat and Fuji SIC LRSG's. I matched it to a Cofed 16S filled with 500 yds 65 lb. Power Pro and topped with 100 yds of 50 lb Big Game.
On October 28, 2001, I was fishing an overnight trip in the Gulf of Mexico out of Port Aransas, Texas. I caught this nice Yellowfin Tuna chunking behind an anchored shrimp boat. Had it on the deck in less than 20 minutes and had the full boat's attention the whole time. Some thought the rod was too light (there used to fishing broom sticks and 6/0's down here). Others were asking what type of line is that when I was into the spectra. The Pic is attached, notice the rod against the rail to my left.
The rod performed flawlessly and really put the hurt on that tuna. I had people come to me after I landed the fish and ask about my tackle. The Captain even commented on how easy the fish were landed. I told all about the construction of the black steel rods and I know of at least one person that bought one from Louis after watching that fight. I posted the blow by blow on the allcoast gulf coast board. Here are some clips from that:
The deckhand threw chum and I drop in. Down about 30 feet and I see my line heading under the boat. Reel, reel, reel all comes tight and Hook-up! This tuna takes me down the rail toward the stern and has me into the spectra before I get halfway down the rail. I'm about 100 yards into the spectra by the time we reach the port corner. 20 minutes on the stern and I've got a 70 lb yellowfin on the deck. No one else hooks up.
