Seeker 1998 five day trip on the Shogun
The trip of a lifetime· that is what they all said, even the guys who have been fishing these waters for more than twenty-five years. Trip of a lifetime they said. Even the Legend said it, not on a five day, never seen it, not like this, he said. Sometimes on an eleven or eighteen day trip you might get four days of fishing like this, but on a five day trip four days is all there is to fish and the quality was there every day and with over 1,100 fish in the hold· the trip of a lifetime.
The Seeker 5 day trip of Î98, 29 fishermen (including Marlena, if sheâs not one of the guys nobody is) set out from Fishermanâs Landing in San Diego to try our luck with a hand picked crew, a legendary Skipper, and Chartermaster Joe Pfister of Seeker Rods.
I remember it was over a year ago when Eddie Marty called me and said, "Seeker trip next August, weâre all signing up, get on it." I said, "well, what is it, why do I..." "you want on this," says Eddie. "But..." I say, he says, "You want on this". "Ok" I say. I send in a deposit right away and I end up on the Seeker trip Î98. God bless you Eddie.
We went off shore 90 miles down the beach and hit the first hook up around 7 a.m., we had been trolling since 5 a.m. (unlike many Skippers ours was not constrained by ephemeral conditions such as light). I remember the time because I was on the troll and had asked Eddie to watch my rig for just one minute while I ducked below, no sooner was I there, than the most thrilling sound in the world, "HOOK UP" was shouted with true conviction. I say that because it is not beyond these characters to take advantage of a situation to disturb a morning ritual for their own amusement, but this time it was real, the bite was on. By the time I got back on deck it was wide open with quality Bluefin tuna, rod after rod going bendo right before your eyes. I flipped a fly line bait (excellent bait on the Shogun, primo stuff) out with my Seeker Black Steel G6470 graphite rod loaded with 40 lb. Soft Steel to start· big mistake. That first 65 lb. Bluefin hit it within 15 seconds and took me around the boat for 45 minutes. I was cold and stiff to say nothing of old. My back was sore for two days from that one fish (my gear was up to the task but I tied up). We caught hundreds of Albacore and scores of Bluefin at that first stop, the first of many firsts on this trip. I learned right away to use the heavier outfits.
